Yr Wylnos Ddiderfyn

The Endless Vigil

[Captain] Black hung the cloth on the high white wall, Cold lay the King in the torchlit hall; Dawn crossed the mountain, pale and wan; None raised the bier. None bore him on.

[Company] Step by step from Tirwyn’s halls, Black the banner, white the walls; None shall wipe our tears away. Grief yet dims the brightest day.

[Captain] Long have we watched where the candles wept, Long has the hollowed kingdom slept; Dust took the chamber, rust took the spade; Still stands the oath the mourners made.

[Company] Step by step from Tirwyn’s halls, Black the banner, white the walls; None shall wipe our tears away. Grief yet dims the brightest day.

[Captain] Give me thy sorrow; give me thy dread. Lay on my heart what is left unsaid. Though thou art broken, thou shalt yet stand; Grief passes onward from hand to hand.

[Company] Voice by voice our lament is spun. Many the mourners, their sorrow one. Take thou my burden; lend me thy breath. We stand fast and reckon with death.

[Captain] No joyful horn sounds upon the heights; Tirwyn’s bells toll throughout the night. Yet where they knell, the proud give way; For those without dawn fear not the day.

[Captain and Company] Ar hyd y nos, ar hyd y nos, Clychau Tirwyn, ar hyd y nos. Ni ddaw’r wawr; ni all y wawr ddod. Clychau Tirwyn, ar hyd y nos.

[Company] Step by step from Tirwyn’s halls, Black the banner, white the walls; None shall wipe our tears away. Grief yet dims the brightest day.

[Captain] Should I fall where the old grass grows, Leave me unburied among our foes; Turn not aside for my defence; Take up my sorrow and bear it hence.

[Company] Rank upon rank and breath upon breath, We bear the vigil unto death; Sword beside sword, bear down with me. Though dead be the king, his Host walks free.

[Captain and Company] Step by step from Tirwyn’s halls, Black the banner, white the walls; None shall wipe our tears away. Grief yet dims the brightest day.

[Captain and Company] Step by step, though all else cease; No grave receives him. No dawn brings peace. Whilst one voice lives to sing our lay, Grief yet darkens every day.
